Great American Smokeout - Nov 2008 The Action for Community Transformation (ACT) Coalition, Union County´s Drug Abuse Prevention Community Action Team (DAPCAT), and the Central Susquehanna Colorectal Cancer Taskforce sponsored a Great American Smoke Out kick-off event the evening of November 19, 2008, the night before the American Cancer Society´s official date of November 20th. The event held at The Campus Theatre in downtown Lewisburg featured a mini-health fair with information provided by DAPCAT, Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc., Central Susquehanna Colorectal Cancer Taskforce, and the American Cancer Society based around tobacco related issues. Live radio coverage was provided by WQKX of the Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation. Attendees were treated to pizza and a discounted admission price to the theater´s feature movie Madagascar 2. The event was attended by 28 people. “Quit Kits” were available to tobacco users, as well as cessation counselors were on hand to help any interested tobacco users to create a game plan for quitting. Children attending the event were also provided information to help prevent them from beginning to use tobacco. Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc. has representation on all three sponsoring community groups.

The display with brochures was set up in the high school cafeteria on November 20, 2008. The Great American Smokeout is an annual event in the United States to encourage Americans (of whom 45.8 million smoke) to quit tobacco smoking. The American Cancer Society held its first Smokeout in 1977. The event challenges people not to smoke cigarettes for 24 hours, hoping their decision to quit will last forever. It is held annually on the third Thursday in November.
